Theuerdank
Das Werk ist von Kaiser Maximilian I. (1459-1519) in der Tradition des späthöfischen Versromanes zum Ruhm des Rittertums und seiner Dynastie entworfen. Es stellt eine Allegorie auf seine Brautfahrt zu Maria von Burgund dar. Die eigens dafür geschaffene Drucktype ahmt eine deutsche Kanzleischrift nach. Die erste Auflage war ausschließlich zu Geschenkzwecken bestimmt. Lediglich 40 Exemplare sind für hochgestellte Persönlichkeiten des Reiches auf Pergament gedruckt worden. Die Vergabe erfolgte erst nach Maximilians Tod auf Veranlassung seines Enkels Erzherzog Ferdinand.
This extremely rare leaf is from one of the greatest illustrated books of the first half of the sixteenth century. This extraordinary work was inspired and written with the assistance of the court poet, Melchior Pfinzing, in the tradition of the heroic epics, by Emperor Maximilian I [1459-1519]. This poem describes the courtship of young Maximilian (Theuerdank) and Maria, heiress of the Kingdom of Burgundy. The book was illustrated with 118 fine woodcut illustrations by Hans Burgkmair, Hans Schaeufelein and Leonhard Beck. Only 40 copies were printed on very high quality vellum by Hans Schoensperger and distributed to the emperor\'s friends. Kaiser Maximilian I., \'Theuerdank\', Nürnberg 1517. Dieses Blatt ist aus eine der 40 Exemplare, gedruckt auf Pergament. Es stammt aus das Exemplar aus dem Vorbesitz von Kronprinz Friedrich Wilhelm von Preussen, das incomplet verkauft worden ist in ein auction.
