Description

Vellum manuscript leaf with a large painted initial from an antiphonary, Italy, second half of the 15th century.

Size: 59 x 43 cms; the condition is very good.

The painting of Christ and the Saints is very vivid with flowers and leaves coming from two corners.

The text is in a gothic hand in dark brown and red. The music on red 4-line staves.At the other side is a very beautiful initial C in bright colours and gold leaf.

The whole leaf has seven initials with penwork in red and blue.

To help you read medieval Latin here is the transcription of part of the text:

Quo custode procul pelle rex Christe piissime omne nefas inimici mundos corde et corpore paradiso redde tuo nos sola clementia .
