Description

Good quality leaf, written in a very regular hand with some nice initials with penwork in red and blue on very thin vellum*, in Paris around 1250.

This leaf is from Paralipomenon II or, as we know it: Chronicles II.

You can find the Vulgate text on the internet, alongside the King James Version.

An interesting feature of this leaf is the mistake the scribe made: he had the “original”text in front of him and copied it. But he sometimes made an Augensprung, as the Germans** call it: when he had copied a word he looked for the next word and sometimes skipped some words: Have a good look at the text and I’ll try to explain.

...multitudinis plurimas obtulere primitias filii Israhel frumenti vini et olei mellis quoque et omnium quae gignit humus decimas...

when the scribe had come here he saw the next word was : “ obtulerunt”, but he went to the same word in the next sentence and skipped the following [ plus the word obtulerunt!!]

“sed et filii Israhel et Iuda qui habitabant in urbibus Iuda obtulerunt decimas boum” et ovium decimasque sanctorum quae voverant Domino Deo suo atque universa portantes fecerunt acervos plurimos...

Fortunately there was a corrector and he added the forgotten words at the bottom of the leaf [ and the scribe was punished: if he was a monk – some days without hot food, just bread and water...]

* In Paris they began to write the whole bible in one volume – before only parts of the bible were in one book, e.g. the Psalms or the Gospels – and therefore the vellum had to be very thin. [ It is even said that the parchment makers aborted sheep to get very thin skins of the unborn lambs!]

**The French use “saut du même au même”.

Condition: very good.
