Description

A vellum leaf from a French Book of Hours, probably written in Paris, around 1450.

The traditional illustration for Lauds is the Visitation, the pregnant Virgin Mary’s visit to her cousin Elisabeth, who herself was pregnant with John the Baptist. John of course would prepare the way for the Lord. Elisabeth not only lays her hand in Mary’s but also puts her right hand on Mary’s belly, so on her unborn Saviour! Mary is dressed in a royal blue robe, Elisabeth in a red one.

The upper part of the figures is set before a gilt diaper pattern which make the illustration very attractive. There is also a magnificent capital D with many colors and gold. Around the whole page are flowers, fruits and leaves.

Unfortunately the upper part of the page is rubbed with some loss of color, but not affecting the two figures.

The text reads:

Deus, in adiutorium meum intende:
Domine, ad adiuvandum me festina.
Gloria Patri et Filio
et Spiritui Sancto
O God, make speed to save me:
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit,
On the other side of the page we find Psalm 92: Dominus regnavit decorem in ductus...

Leaf has been cut off shortly at the topp and right side, it has also a small hole (an original problem in the vellum leaf )
